Chelan County. The name means "deep water" - the Indian term for the large lake that dominates the northeast portion of the county. The county was established in March 1899 after being partitioned from what were then sections of Okanogan and Kittitas counties. Passed by the legislature, the bill was signed by Governor John R. Rogers.
